Excavation Unit Information from Area 12D16

The data files EXCUNITS_12D16.TXT and EXCUNITS_12D16.XLS provide information on each excavation unit from area 12D16, including its dimensions and depth, matrix composition, artifact counts, and additional remarks. EXCUNITS_12D16.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file; EXCUNITS_12D16.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line in the ASCII file represents one excavation unit. There are 78 lines, each with 36 variables separated by commas. The variables are listed in the following order:

1 Unit name—a locus key comprised from a letter representing the excavated grid square and a running number for each square. Here unit is comparable to locus
2 Square—name of grid square the unit is excavated in.
3 Definition—verbal remarks regarding physical characteristics of the unit and decisions undertaken during excavation
4 Date in which the unit was opened
5 Date in which the unit was closed
6 Upper level of the NE corner (in meters above sea level).
7 Lower level of the NE corner (in meters above sea level).
8 Upper level of the SW corner (in meters above sea level).
9 Lower level of the SW corner (in meters above sea level).
10 Upper level of the NW corner (in meters above sea level).
11 Lower level of the NW corner (in meters above sea level).
12 Upper level of the SE corner (in meters above sea level).
13 Lower level of the SE corner (in meters above sea level).
14 Loci Above, if applicable
15 Loci Below, if applicable
16 A verbal description of unit Borders, if different than the grid square
17 Horizontal dimensions of the unit in meters
18 Verbal explanation of opening reason
19 A verbal description of the unit’s matrix
20 A verbal description of any special finds uncovered in the unit
21 Stratigraphy--A verbal description of observations made during the excavation regarding relations to other units

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

This means that the unit name is A100 and it is defined as top soil. It was opened on may 10th, 2012 and was not closed by the end of the excavation. Upon opening, The elevation at the top NE corner of the unit was 95.92 m. No other elevations were measured and there were no loci above or below this unit. The unit borders were on the grid square, meaning that the dimensions were exactly 5X5 m. “topsoil” is noted as the opening reason, meaning this the first unit excavated in the square. The matrix was described as topsoil and there were no special finds or stratigraphic observations. No finds where collected and no flotation was preformed for this unit. There were not additional remarks by the excavator.

The last, or 78th line of the ASCII text file is:

This means that the name is I949 and it is defined as the base of a floor level. It was opened on June 2nd, 2015 and closed on June 3, 2015. The unit elevations are 90.89 (top NE); 90.87 (bottom NE); 90.70 (top SW); 90.69 (bottom SW), 91.16 (top NW); 90.95 (bottom NW); 90.68 (top SE) and 90.57 (bottom SE). The locus above this unit is 946 and there were not loci below it. Limits of the excavated hut define the borders of this unit and its dimension are 7X3 m. the unit was opened to record the removal of the floor level. The matrix was described as “burnt black soil with red patches” and a ground stone tool and posthole where cited as special finds. No specific stratigraphic observations were made, no other finds were collected, or samples sent to flotation. Finally, the excavator included detailed notes about the excavation of this unit. Only the first sentence of which is cited above.
