Ceramic Densities from Survey

The data files SURVDEN.TXT and SURVDEN.XLS contain data on surface densities of ceramics for all periods and all survey collection units. For an explanation on the calculation of ceramic densities, refer to the article of Shelach-Lavi et al. 2016 provided with this data set. SURVDEN.TXT is a comma delimited ASCII text file, which should be easy to import into spreadsheet, database, and statistical programs for manipulation and analysis. SURVDEN.XLSX contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet which is easier to browse, and can also be imported into many programs. Each line in the data files represents one survey collection unit. There are 1,386 lines, each with 26 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1 Collection--the name of the collection unit from which lithics where collected. Refer to the Field Methods document for description of naming conventions.
2 Area--the surface area covered by the entire collection unit (m2)
3 Surface visibility--a subjective characterization of the degree of visibility of surface artifacts: H=high, M=medium , L=low, blank=missing data
4 Collection method: G=general, S=systematic.

For a description of collection methods, refer to the Field Methods document.
5 Number of circles--if a systematic collection was made, the number of sampled circles, each 3 m in diameter.
6 Total number of sherds collected
7 Total number of unknown (unclassified) sherd
8 Total number of modern sherds (post-Liao times)
9 Total number of Xiaohexi sherds
10 Total number of Xinglongwa sherds
11 Total number of Zhaobaogou sherds
12 Total number of Hongshan sherds
13 Total number of Lower Xiajiadian sherds
14 Total number of Gaotaishan sherds
15 Total number of Linghe sherds
16 Total number of Zhanguo-Han sherds
17 Total number of Liao sherds
18 Xiaohexi sherd density (sherds per square meter)

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

This means that the collection unit is 12A1028, the collection unit covered an area of 2483.03 m2 and the surface visibility was high. This collection was a systematic collection that used three circles. In total, 17 sherds were collected, none of them were unknown or modern sherds. Of the 17 pre-modern sherds, there were 0 Xiaohexi sherds, 0 Xinglongwa sherds, 0 Zhaobaogou sherds, 2 Lower Xiajiadian sherds, 15 Gaotaishan sherds, 0 Zhanguo-Han sherds, 0 Linghe sherds and 0 Liao sherds. The Xiaohexi sherds density was 0.00 sherds per square meter, the Xinglongwa sherd density was 0.00 sherds per square meter, The Zhaobaogou sherd density was 0.00 sherds per square meter.
