Phytoliths

The data files PHYT.TXT and PHYT.XLS contain data on all the recovered phytoliths. PHYT.TXT is an ASCII text file; PHYT.XLS contains the same data in the form of an EXCEL spreadsheet. Each line represents the specimens of one taxon identified in one sample. There are 395 lines in the text file, each with four variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1
Number of stratigraphic test
2
Stratigraphic level
3
Identified taxon or type
4
Count (number of recovered specimens)

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

VQ023,1,Panicum sp. 1,40

This indicates that the sample was recovered in the stratigraphic test VQ023, in level 1. This identified taxon is Panicum sp. 1, and there were 40 specimens.

The last (584th) line of the ASCII text file is:

VQ041,9,Zea mays,8

This indicates that the sample was recovered in the stratigraphic test VQ041, in level 9. The taxon is Zea mays, and there were 8 specimens.
