Wankarani Artifact Density Confidence Levels

The data file WART.TXT contains the densities and proportions of various artifact classes recovered in surface collections on Wankarani sites. Each line represents a Wankarani site. There are 17 lines, each with 29 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1 Site number
2 Mean sherd density (per square meter)
3 Error range at the 80% confidence level
4 Error range at the 95% confidence level
5 Error range at the 99% confidence level
6 Mean biface density (per square meter)
7 Error range at the 80% confidence level
8 Error range at the 95% confidence level
9 Error range at the 99% confidence level
10 Percentage of bifaces (among all artifacts)
11 Error range at the 80% confidence level
12 Error range at the 95% confidence level
13 Error range at the 99% confidence level
14 Mean retouch debris density (per square meter)
15 Error range at the 80% confidence level
16 Error range at the 95% confidence level
17 Error range at the 99% confidence level
18 Retouch debris to utilized bifaces ratio
19 Error range at the 80% confidence level
20 Error range at the 95% confidence level
21 Error range at the 99% confidence level
22 Mean basalt artifact density (per square meter)

The first line of the file, for example, looks like this:

This indicates that at site LJ-B, mean sherd density (per square meter) is 19.125; with error ranges of ±9.145 at the 80% confidence level, ±17.765 at the 90% confidence level, and ±32.610 at the 99% confidence level. The mean biface density (per square meter) is 0.4; with error ranges of ±0.260, ±0.500, and ±0.924 at the same three confidence levels. The percentage of bifaces (among all artifacts) is 1.688; ±0.918, ±1.663, and ±2.758. The mean retouch debris density (per square meter) is 0.45; ±0.737, ±1.432, and ±2.628. The retouch debris to utilized bifaces ratio is 0.9; ±1.380, ±2.498, and ±4.144. The mean basalt artifact density (per square meter) is 4.3; ±3.171, ±6.160, and ±11.308. The mean primary production debris density (per square meter) is 3.8; ±2.116, ±4.111, and ±7.547.

The last (17th) line of the file is:

This indicates that at site B-7, mean sherd density (per square meter) is 20.267; with error ranges of ±5.082 at the 80% confidence level, ±8.635 at the 90% confidence level and ±13.082 at the 99% confidence level. The mean biface density (per square meter) is 0.35; with error ranges of ±0.238, ±0.430, and ±0.714 at the same three confidence levels. The percentage of bifaces (among all artifacts) is 1.498; ±0.918, ±1.663, and ±2.758. The mean retouch debris density (per square meter) is 1.4; ±0.536, ±0.910, and ±1.379. The retouch debris to utilized bifaces ratio is 5.195; ±2.006, ±3.409, and ±5.164. The mean basalt artifact density (per square meter) is 4.517; ±1.943, ±3.301, and ±5.001. The mean primary production debris density (per square meter) is 2.95; ±1.447, ±2.459, and ±3.726.
