Cluster 23 Geophysics Dataset

Bryan K. Hanks

This dataset complements the article Examining Medieval Long-Wall Frontier Systems (11th-12th centuries AD) through Archaeological Geophysics in the Eastern Mongolian Steppe Region (2024), Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports 2024(60: 104860), by Bryan K. Hanks, Gideon Shelach-Lavi, Marc Bermann, Emily Eklund, Aspen Greaves, Amartuvshin Chunag, Narantsetseg Tserendash, Yonatan Goldsmith, Jargalan Burentogtokh, and Erdenebat Ulambayar. It provides the results of fluxgate gradiometry survey and ground truthing of earthen structures associated with a long-wall frontier system in northeastern Mongolia.

Funding to collect the data presented here was provided by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation program ("The Wall" project, grant agreement No. 882894) with additional support for the geophysical survey by the Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences, University of Pittsburgh.

The links below provide the results of geophysical surveys at three different locations within Cluster 23. They provide data on fluxgate gradiometry and GPR in formats native to the geophysical hardware used, as well as additional file types (e.g. .csv, xyz, etc.) that may be imported and used with other software programs. The two native files types are:

Large Square:
Fluxgate Gradiometry Data

Small Square:
Fluxgate Gradiometry and GPR Data
