Lithics Data by Household Unit

The data files LITHHH.TXT and LITHHH.XLS contain the data on Hongshan lithics aggregated by household unit. LITHHH.TXT is a comma-delimited ASCII text file, which should be easy to import into spreadsheet, database, and statistical programs for manipulation and analysis. LITHHH.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet which is easier to browse, and can also be imported into many programs. Each line in LITHHH.TXT and LITHHH.XLS represents one household unit. There are 50 lines, each containing 51 variables in the following order:

1 Household Unit: The number of the household unit the line represents.
2 Total lithics. Count of the total number of lithic artifacts, including formal tools and debitage.
3 Number of formal tools.
4 Number of formal tools made of raw material of "good" quality.
5 Number of formal tools made of raw material of "poor" quality.
6 Number of formal tools made by flaking (can co-occur with grinding and/or pecking).
7 Number of formal tools made by grinding (can co-occur with flaking and/or pecking).
8 Number of formal tools made by pecking (can co-occur with grinding and/or flaking).
9 Number of abraders.
10 Number of awls and drills.
11 Number of axes and adzes.
12 Number of blades.
13 Number of retouched blades.
14 Number of retouched flakes.
15 Number of unifacial scrapers.
16 Number of bifacial scrapers.
17 Number of choppers.
18 Number of blade cores..
19 Number of unidirectional flake cores.
20 Number of multidirectional flake cores.
21 Number of projectile points.
22 Number of blanks.
23 Number of edges with angles less than 25 degrees (total for blades, knives, flakes, and scrapers)
24 Number of edges with angles of 25-44 degrees (total for blades, knives, flakes, and scrapers)
25 Number of edges with angles of 45-65 degrees (total for blades, knives, flakes, and scrapers)

28 Number of pieces of deibtage of raw material of "good" quality.
29 Number of pieces of debitage of raw material of "poor" quality.
30 Number of complete and broken flakes assigned to "core" manufacturing type, as defined by Bradbury and Carr (1999).
31 Number of complete and broken flakes assigned to "tool" manufacturing type, as defined by Bradbury and Carr (1999).
32 Number of complete flakes, as defined by Sullivan and Rozen (1985).
33 Number of broken flakes, as defined by Sullivan and Rozen (1985).
34 Number of flake fragments, as defined by Sullivan and Rozen (1985).
35 Number of pieces of shatter, as defined by Sullivan and Rozen (1985).
36 Weight (g) of all debitage in Size Grade 1 (caught in 1-inch screen).
37 Weight (g) of all debitage in Size Grade 2 (caught in 1/2-inch screen).
38 Weight (g) of all debitage in Size Grade 3 (caught in 1/4-inch screen).
39 Weight (g) of all debitage in Size Grade 4 (passes 1/4-inch screen).
40 Count of all debitage in Size Grade 1 (caught in 1-inch screen).
41 Count of all debitage in Size Grade 2 (caught in 1/2-inch screen).
42 Count of all debitage in Size Grade 3 (caught in 1/4-inch screen).
43 Count of all debitage in Size Grade 4 (passes 1/4-inch screen).
44 Count of debitage without cortex in Size Grade 1 (caught in 1-inch screen).
45 Count of debitage without cortex in Size Grade 2 (caught in 1/2-inch screen).
46 Count of debitage without cortex in Size Grade 3 (caught in 1/4-inch screen).
47 Count of debitage without cortex in Size Grade 4 (passes 1/4-inch screen).
48 Count of debitage with cortex in Size Grade 1 (caught in 1-inch screen).
49 Count of debitage with cortex in Size Grade 2 (caught in 1/2-inch screen).
50 Count of debitage with cortex in Size Grade 3 (caught in 1/4-inch screen).
51 Count of debitage with cortex in Size Grade 4 (passes 1/4-inch screen).

The first line of the ASCII text file LITHH.TXT, for example, looks like this:

001,28,1,1,,1,,,,,,,,,,,,1,,,,,,,,,27,9,18,3,16,15,4,3,5,0.00,61.80,14.80,0.00,0,13,14,0,0,6,5,0,0,7,9,0

This means that the line contains data from Household Unit 001; there were 28 lithic artifacts, of which 1 was a formal tool. That formal tool was made of good material by flaking; it was a blade core, and edge angle was not recorded for cores. The other 27 artifacts were debitage; 9 made of good material and 18 of poor material. 3 of them were assigned to "core" and 16 to "tool" manufacturing type; 15 were complete flakes; 4, broken flakes; 3, flake fragments; and 5, shatter. Of all debitage 0.00 g were in size grade 1; 61.80 g in size grade 2; 14.80 g in size grade 3; and 0.00 g in size grade 4. Of all debitage 0 pieces were in size grade 1; 13 in size grade 2; 14 in size grade 3; and none in size grade 4. Of debitage without cortex 0 pieces were in size grade 1; 6 in size grade 2; 5 in size grade 3; and none in size grade 4. Of debitage with cortex 0 pieces were in size grade 1; 7 in size grade 2; 9 in size grade 3; and none in size grade 4.

The last, or 50th line of the ASCII text file LITHSQ.TXT is:

210,127,8,6,,6,,,,,,,,2,4,,,,,,,2,,2,2,2,119,51,68,19,46,53,12,26,28,181.10,155.90,51.60,0.80,6,44,66,3,1,21,41,2,5,23,25,1

This means that the line contains data from Household Unit 210; there were 127 lithic artifacts, of which 8 were formal tools. 6 formal tools were made of good material by flaking. There were 2 retouched flakes, 4 unifacial scrapers, and 2 blanks. Of the flakes and scrapers, 2 had acute edge angles, 2 obtuse edge angles, and 2 very obtuse edge angles. The other 119 artifacts were debitage; 51 made of good material and 68 of poor material. 19 of them were assigned to "core" and 46 to "tool" manufacturing type; 53 were complete flakes, 12 broken flakes, 26 flake fragments, and 28 shatter. Of all debitage 181.10 g were in size grade 1; 155.90 g in size grade 2; 51.60 g in size grade 3; and 0.80 g in size grade 4. Of all debitage 6 pieces were in size grade 1; 44 in size grade 2; 66 in size grade 3; and 3 in size grade 4. Of debitage without cortex 1 pieces were in size grade 1; 21 in size grade 2; 41 in size grade 3; and 2 in size grade 4. Of debitage with cortex 5 pieces were in size grade 1; 23 in size grade 2; 25 in size grade 3; and 1 in size grade 4.
