Pedregal Dataset
Robyn E. Cutright

Lithics

The data files LITHICS.TXT and LITHICS.XLS contain data on the size, type, and weight of lithic artifacts recovered within the Pedregal site. LITHICS.TXT is an ASCII text file, and LITHICS.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one lithic artifact. There are 24 lines in the text file, each with 13 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1

Context

2

Number. The bag number.

3

Sector. Designates the sector of the site (A-E).

4

Area. Designates specific areas within each sector.

5

Unit. Designates excavation unit (1-6) or test pit (PP1-33).

6

Feature

7

Level

8

Type. The class of lithic artifact: Flake, shatter, utilized flake, porra etc.

Note: Although "porra" is roughly translated as "club head," the lithic described is in fact an agricultural tool similar to a digging stick weight (please see the dissertation associated with this dataset for more information.)

9

Dimensions (mm). Maximum length x width x thickness.

10

Weight in grams.

11

Porra: Size of perforation.

12

Porra completeness. Whether or not the porra is complete and unbroken.

13

Porra: Polish.

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

44,20,A,2,1,0,1,mano de moler,88.4 x 87.5 x 29.9,350,,,

This indicates that the lithic artifact comes from context 44. Its bag number is 20. It comes from sector A, Area 2, Unit 1, Feature 0, Level 1. It is a "Mano de moler" with dimensions 88.4 mm x 87.5 mm x 29.9 mm, and a weight of 350 grams. Since it is not a porra, no other variables are specified.

The last, or 24th, line of the ASCII text file is:

0,2776,A,4,0,0,00,porra,124.8 x 111 x 49.7,1007,42.03,no,no

This indicates that the lithic artifact comes from context 0. Its bag number is 2776. It comes from sector A, Area 4, Unit 0, Feature 0, Level 00. It is a "porra" with dimensions 124.8 mm x 111 mm x 49.7 mm, and a weight of 1007 grams. The size of its perforation is 42.03 mm, it is not complete, and it is not polished.
