Faunal

The data files FAUNAL.TXT and FAUNAL.XLS contain information about the types of faunal remains recovered at each context within the Pedregal site. FAUNAL.TXT is an ASCII text file, and FAUNAL.XLS contains the same data in the form of an Excel spreadsheet. Each line represents one species element. There are 913 lines in the text file, each with 6 variables separated by commas. The variables are, in the following order:

1

Context

2

Bag number

3

Species

4

Element code

Head/neck:
1=Skull
2=Axis/atlas
3=Mandible
4=Unidentified head/neck

Forelimb:
5=Cervical vertebra
6=Humerus
7=Radius/ulna
8=Metacarpals/phalanges
9=Unidentified forelimb

Trunk:
10=Ribs
11=Pelvis
12=Scapula
13=Thoracic vertebra
14=Sternum
15=Unidentified trunk

Hindlimb:
16=Femur
17=Tibia/fibula
18=Metatarsals
19=Unidentified hindlimb

End:
20=Lumbar vertebra
21=Unspecified phalange/metapodial
22=Unspecified vertebra
23=Other
24=Unidentified long bones
25=Unidentified fragments
26=Unidentified tooth
99=Not applicable

Taphonomic code:
0=None observed
1=Burnt
2=Calcined
3=Cutmarks

The first line of the ASCII text file, for example, looks like this:

2,42,Muridae,10,1,0

This indicates that the data pertain to context 2, bag 42, which included one rib fragment of the species Muridae. No specific taphonomy was observed.

The last, or 913th, line of the ASCII text file is:

669,2765,Muridae,25,4,0

This indicates that the data pertain to context 669, bag 2765, which included four undefined fragments of the species Muridae. No specific taphonomy was observed.
